Police in Likoni, Mombasa County, are under scrutiny following the alleged fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy, Hamisi Ibrahim, on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
According to Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Geoffrey Ruheni, the officers responded to a distress call from residents who reported an ongoing robbery in the area.
Ruheni claimed that Ibrahim, who was believed to be part of a juvenile gang, was carrying out the robbery while armed with a machete. He further alleged that the group, upon encountering the police, advanced toward the officers with their machetes, forcing the police to open fire.
However, the boy’s mother disputes the police account, stating that her son had left home that morning to visit a friend and was not involved in any criminal activity.
She explained that Ibrahim, a Grade 9 student, had not gone to school that day because his uniform was still being altered by the tailor.
In an emotional statement, she said she was devastated by the news of her son’s death, particularly as he was shot in the head, and insisted that Ibrahim was not a thief or involved in any gangs.
This tragic incident follows a series of arrests by Mombasa police, who recently detained eight individuals suspected of being involved in a string of robberies in the area. The incident has raised concerns over police use of force and the involvement of minors in criminal activities.
