General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s first son and Chief of Defence for the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), announced his departure from X (formerly Twitter) today, marking the end of a decade-long presence on the platform.
Known for his outspoken and sometimes controversial posts, General Kainerugaba’s decision follows years of public debate surrounding his statements. His tweets, often bold and politically charged, have sparked widespread attention and, on occasion, prompted clarifications from the Ugandan government.
In his farewell message, General Kainerugaba expressed gratitude to his followers, reflecting on his journey since joining the platform in 2014.
“To all my dear followers, it has been a great and rousing journey together for the last ten years, since 2014. However, the time has come, under the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ, to leave and concentrate on His army, the UPDF,” he wrote.
Throughout his time on X, General Kainerugaba’s posts frequently ignited discussions on regional security and politics, drawing mixed reactions. At times, his remarks prompted official government responses to address concerns or distance the administration from his views.
The General indicated that his decision to step away was inspired by a higher calling, explaining that he would now focus on his work within the UPDF.
“I know you all love me and that you will continue to follow me. At an appropriate time in the future, after fulfilling God’s assignment to restore everlasting peace and security to His people in our region, we shall reconvene,” he assured his audience.
In closing, General Kainerugaba called on his followers to support Uganda, Africa, and his father, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“I love you all so much, and in whatever you do, continue to support Uganda, Africa, and our President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Farewell, and God bless you all.”
