Safaricom PLC has announced the appointment of Edward Okaro as an Independent Non-Executive Director, effective January 15, 2025.
This addition to the Board brings in Okaro’s extensive expertise, which spans over 30 years in financial management, auditing, and strategic risk management.
Okaro’s career highlights include a 26-year tenure at Ernst and Young, where he rose to the roles of Director and later Partner in the Africa Risk Services division.
He is a Fellow Certified Public Accountant (FCPA) with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
This appointment comes following the resignation of Rose Ogega, who stepped down on November 29, 2024, after serving as an Independent Non-Executive Director for more than five years.
Ogega, who joined the Board in February 2019, brought over two decades of experience in managing large organizations and startups, leaving a lasting impact during her tenure.
With Okaro’s addition, Safaricom’s Board now includes three Independent Non-Executive Directors, alongside Professor Bitange Ndemo, a leading ICT expert and Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, and Winnie Ouko, the founder and CEO of Lattice Consulting, a firm specializing in strategy and financial advisory.
The appointment has been approved by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) under the Capital Markets (Public Offers, Listing, and Disclosures) Regulations, 2023.
Safaricom has expressed confidence in Okaro’s ability to enhance the Board’s oversight and strategic direction as the company continues to innovate in the evolving telecommunications sector.
