Aisha Akinyi Abubakar, 48, a senior Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official in Kilifi County, was killed during a robbery at her home in Utange, Mombasa County, early Sunday morning.
The attack occurred around 3:00 am, when two suspects broke into her home by cutting the kitchen window grills. Armed with a crowbar and a knife, the attackers targeted Akinyi and her 18-year-old son, Khasim Hassan.
Akinyi suffered fatal injuries, including stab wounds and cuts to the head, while her son sustained severe head injuries. The robbers fled the scene with electronic items, including a 65-inch TV, a sound system, an iPad, and the victim’s mobile phone.
Khasim managed to drive his mother to Premier Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. He is currently undergoing treatment and has not yet been discharged.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the robbery and visited the crime scene in an effort to apprehend the suspects. One of the attackers reportedly wore a face mask.
