The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory urging Kenyans to prepare for moderate rainfall in various parts of the country over the next five days, from Saturday, January 18, to Wednesday, January 22.
In its forecast, the department identified areas expected to experience occasional rainfall, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the West of the Rift Valley, the South Rift Valley, and the South-Eastern lowlands bordering Tanzania.
Rainfall Projections
Residents in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia should prepare for weekend showers. Other counties expected to experience light to moderate rainfall include Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley counties—Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi—are also forecast to receive moderate rainfall, primarily in the afternoons. Light rains are expected in Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River County.
Most rainfall activity is anticipated during the afternoons, with sunny intervals dominating the mornings.
Temperature Overview
The Met Department predicts sunny and dry conditions for many regions, particularly in the North Eastern counties, such as Wajir, where temperatures could peak at 37°C.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, are expected to experience temperatures ranging from 6°C to 28°C. The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley regions will see temperatures ranging between 11°C and 32°C.
Coastal counties are forecast to have minimum and maximum temperatures of around 24°C.
Wind and Night Conditions
Nights are expected to be partly cloudy across the country. Additionally, Turkana and Marsabit Counties will experience strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s).
The department has advised residents to prepare for the varying weather conditions and adhere to safety precautions, especially in areas prone to afternoon showers and strong winds.
