The United States has confirmed that al-Shabaab leader Mohamed Mire, also known as Abu Abdirahman, was killed in a December 24, 2024, airstrike.
Mire, who served as al-Shabaab’s finance head during the Westgate Mall (2013) and DusitD2 (2019) attacks, was killed alongside another militant near Quyno Barrow, approximately 260 kilometers from Mogadishu.
The U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) stated that Mire had been a pivotal figure in al-Shabaab for 15 years, holding roles such as the head of the group’s interior wing and overseeing regional governance. His involvement included financing and planning attacks in Kenya and Somalia. He was also listed as a global terrorist by the U.S. in October 2022.
This airstrike is part of ongoing U.S. efforts to weaken al-Shabaab’s capabilities in the region, supporting Somali and regional security initiatives.
