Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested three individuals for assaulting a woman at a graveyard during a burial ceremony in Nyabisimba, Nyamira County.
The suspects, identified as Robert Pokea Sarudi, 43, Bismark Ondiek Sarudi, 40, and Lameck Ogindo Osoro, 27, allegedly forced the woman to participate in traditional burial rituals against her will, inflicting injuries on her body.
“The incident occurred on March 21, 2025, when the woman, who had been married to her late ex-husband for over nine years, found herself caught in a troubling family dispute,” the DCI report stated.
After separating from her husband and losing contact for years, the woman was unexpectedly contacted by her mother-in-law and asked to bring her children to their father’s funeral following his tragic death in a road accident.
As the funeral proceedings unfolded, she was ambushed by her in-laws, who insisted she partake in the burial customs, including throwing soil into the grave. When she refused, the suspects reportedly unleashed a brutal attack, accusing her of being responsible for her ex-husband’s death.
Authorities were alerted, and an immediate investigation led to the arrest of the three suspects in Mwongorisi sub-location.
The suspects have since been taken to Kiambere Police Station, where they are being processed before facing formal charges. Meanwhile, law enforcement officers are continuing efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the incident.
