Victor Wanyama’s return to Scottish football had a nightmare start after he was sent off just 20 minutes into his second spell with Dunfermline on Saturday evening.
The former Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder came on as a second-half substitute with Dunfermline trailing 1-0 at Somerset Park. However, his return quickly turned disastrous.
Wanyama was introduced in the 64th minute, but in the 85th minute, he was given a red card. Four minutes later, Jamie Murphy doubled Ayr United’s lead after Connor McLennan’s first-half opener.
The Kenyan midfielder was sent off for handball after slipping outside the box while in possession. He then pulled down Ayr attacker Mark McKenzie, preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Ayr United sealed their 3-0 victory with a stoppage-time goal from Ethan Walker, compounding Dunfermline’s woes.
