Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has voiced his frustration over what he described as interference with his recent public engagements, alleging that a police officer in Budalangi barred him from addressing residents during a planned speech.
In a statement, Salasya expressed his disappointment over the incident, which occurred in Port Victoria, saying he was surprised when an Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD)—whose name he has yet to ascertain—abruptly cancelled his scheduled address. He criticized the move as a violation of his constitutional rights and a missed opportunity to share important development plans with the community.
“It was disheartening to witness security personnel shutting down a speech that held the potential to benefit the community. Today in Port Victoria, I, Peter Salasya, was surprised to see an OCPD—whose identity I do not know—abruptly cancel my planned speech,” Salasya said.
Despite the disruption, the MP later managed to speak to a group of residents by the roadside, away from the original venue. “I had a lot of development agendas I wanted to share with the people, but the OCPD stopped me, telling me I couldn’t speak, despite the law granting us the right to freedom of speech and assembly,” he added.
