The family of slain blogger Albert Ojwang has refuted comedian Eric Omondi’s claim that Kenyans have so far raised “about KSh 10 million” towards funeral and legal costs, calling the figure inaccurate and misleading.
Speaking during an interview on the Obinna YouTube show, family spokesperson Kenneth Ouma clarified that all contributions are being directed to a single official paybill account managed by the family and two trustees.
“We have a central account where all donations are channelled. As of yesterday we were at KSh 2.06 million from the public. When you add President William Ruto’s KSh 2 million and Raila Odinga’s KSh 1 million, the account is about KSh 5.6 million,” Ouma said.
He emphasized that Omondi’s KSh 10 million estimate was speculative. “It’s just an assumption,” Ouma stated, insisting that every contribution made to the official account is documented and accounted for.
The family also raised alarm over a fraudulent paybill number that has been circulating online, warning well-wishers to avoid sending money to any unofficial accounts, including those mimicking Omondi’s initial fundraiser.
Ojwang’s burial is scheduled to take place later this week in Homa Bay County.
