The driver of a matatu operating on the Rongai–CBD route, popularly known as Moxie, has been arrested after a viral video showed a tout performing dangerous stunts while hanging on the vehicle’s door rails.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirmed that the driver engaged in reckless driving, including sudden braking, sharp turns, and rapid acceleration, acts that put passengers at high risk of fatal injuries.

According to NTSA, the driver was apprehended shortly after the video surfaced online and was arraigned in court. He was charged with multiple traffic offences and released on a cash bail of Ksh 100,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh 300,000.

“While in the vehicle, passengers including the conductor must always use seats and seatbelts for their safety,” NTSA emphasized in a statement.

The authority commended members of the public for reporting the incident and urged commuters to remain vigilant against reckless operators on Kenyan roads.

In the video that sparked outrage, the tout is seen dangerously swinging and performing stunts while clinging onto the door rails, ignoring safety measures.
