Police in Kisumu East have arrested four men and recovered a stolen firearm believed to have been snatched from a police officer during the burial of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga last Sunday in Bondo, Siaya County.
According to police reports, the suspects were apprehended on Saturday afternoon at a hideout in the Mbeme area following an intelligence-led operation by Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based at Kasagam Police Station.
Police Recover Loaded Jericho Pistol
During the raid, officers recovered a loaded Jericho pistol, which was reportedly stolen from Police Constable Benson Kodia, an officer attached to the Kakamega Governor’s security detail.
The firearm was allegedly snatched from the officer as he escorted the governor to his vehicle during the high-profile burial attended by dignitaries and political leaders.
“The recovered firearm has been positively identified and will undergo ballistic analysis as part of ongoing investigations,” said a senior DCI officer aware of the operation.
Suspects in Custody for Interrogation
The four suspects are currently being held in custody for further interrogation and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
Police say they are pursuing additional suspects believed to have aided in concealing the firearm after the incident.
The recovery marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing probe into security breaches witnessed during Raila Odinga’s funeral, where multiple officers were deployed to manage large crowds.
