A police officer is recovering in hospital after he was accidentally shot and seriously wounded by his colleague during a security operation in Hagadera, Garissa County, on Sunday evening.
According to police reports, the incident occurred as officers responded to a violent confrontation involving a group of individuals in Hagadera Town.
As the officers attempted to disperse the crowd and restore order, a scuffle broke out, during which one officer accidentally discharged his AK-47 rifle, striking his colleague in the back.
The wounded officer was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted in stable condition, officials said.
Authorities have since launched internal reviews to determine how the accidental firing occurred and to enhance safety protocols during crowd-control operations.
Rising concerns about police safety and operational conduct have been the subject of national debate, with various watchdog groups — including Amnesty International — calling for improved training and accountability.
