Instagram has announced a major expansion of its enforcement policies aimed at promoting originality and reducing the spread of recycled content across the platform.
The social media giant revealed that its existing restrictions targeting accounts that repost unedited Reels will now also apply to photos and carousel posts.
Under the updated policy, accounts that mainly share unoriginal or minimally edited content will no longer qualify for recommendations on Instagram’s algorithm-driven surfaces, including the Explore page. This means such accounts could experience a significant drop in visibility, reach, and follower growth.
Instagram says original content refers to material that is fully created by the user or substantially transformed through meaningful creative effort. This includes personally shot and edited photos or videos, educational graphics, visual storytelling, and curated posts that showcase a creator’s unique style or perspective.
The platform further clarified that reused content may still qualify as original if it undergoes significant transformation. Examples include adding commentary, narration, graphics, captions with fresh context, or creative edits that provide additional entertainment, information, or insight beyond the original upload.
However, simple reposting with little to no modification will now face stricter limitations.
To encourage proper attribution and collaboration, Instagram is urging users to utilize built-in tools such as Collab posts, Remix features, and paid partnership labels when working with other creators. Those who simply want to reshare content are advised to use repost options or share posts directly to Stories instead of uploading them again as new content.
The company says the changes are part of its broader effort to reward authentic creators and ensure original content receives fair distribution and visibility on the platform.
The update has already sparked conversations among digital creators, especially meme pages, repost accounts, and entertainment blogs that heavily rely on recycled content for engagement and audience growth.
