Media personality Grace Ekirapa has candidly shared the emotional struggles she faced after the collapse of her marriage to actor and musician Pascal Tokodi, revealing how difficult it was to embrace life as a single mother.
Speaking about the challenging period, Grace admitted that she initially struggled to identify herself as a single mother, saying she searched for alternative ways to describe her situation while coming to terms with the reality of raising her daughter, AJ, on her own.
“Finding myself in this place, I must be honest; I really struggled. I looked for all other names I could call myself other than ‘single mother,’” she said.
Grace disclosed that she frequently turned to prayer, asking God to help her change her perspective and give her strength to remain present and supportive for her daughter.
“God, you have to change this. Even if the world sees me as one, you have to make me not see myself as one because the day I start to see myself as one, I will lose.”
The mother of one recounted moments of emotional breakdown, anger, and frustration as she navigated the challenges of parenthood alone. She revealed that there were days when she would lock herself in her room, overwhelmed by the weight of her circumstances.
“I remember days when I used to wake up and look at AJ and be like, ‘God, what did I do? How did I end up here?’”
Grace also admitted that her struggles sometimes affected her interactions with her young daughter.
“Sometimes I found myself angry. I remember instances where I would lash out at AJ. She was so small. I remember looking at her; I am upset, angry and crying, and she is over there.”
Despite the emotional turmoil, Grace said she found comfort in her faith. She recalled a moment when she felt God encouraging her to view her parenting journey as a partnership rather than a burden she had to carry alone.
“One time I woke up and God told me, ‘I want you to consider this as a partnership between you and me.’ The truth is I could not do it alone.”
Grace and Pascal exchanged vows in a lavish wedding ceremony in 2020 before eventually parting ways. Although their marriage ended amid speculation about differences in lifestyle expectations, the former couple has maintained a cordial co-parenting relationship focused on raising their daughter, AJ.
Her candid reflections have resonated with many parents, particularly single mothers, who have praised her honesty about the emotional and mental challenges that often accompany raising children after a separation.
