NAIROBI, Kenya — Thirty-two Kenyan families who lost relatives in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crash are set to receive a combined Sh11.3 billion in compensation following a lengthy legal battle over the disaster.
Each of the affected families is expected to receive approximately Sh353.3 million, based on the total compensation amount.
Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa on March 10, 2019, killing all 157 people on board.
Among those who died were 36 people connected to Kenya. Parliament previously indicated that 32 of the Kenyan victims held Kenyan passports, while the remaining four were identified as having dual or other nationalities.
The compensation follows years of legal proceedings by families seeking justice and financial redress following the crash.
The disaster involved a Boeing 737 MAX 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines and became one of the most significant aviation tragedies involving the aircraft model.
The settlement will provide substantial compensation to the Kenyan families who lost loved ones, although no financial award can fully compensate for the loss of life suffered in the tragedy.
