MIGORI, Kenya — Siaya Governor James Orengo and members of the Linda Mwananchi team were forced to flee a rally in Migori on Saturday after tear gas was discharged during the political gathering.
The incident triggered chaotic scenes as supporters and members of the entourage scrambled for safety, with the team condemning what it described as another attempt to disrupt its activities.
Footage from the rally in Migori Town showed Orengo addressing supporters before the situation deteriorated. A white Land Cruiser Lexus was seen navigating through a cloud of tear gas as the governor and his team were evacuated from the area.
Supporters gathered along the road were also forced to scatter as the chaos unfolded.
Orengo, speaking in a local dialect, condemned the incident and maintained that the Linda Mwananchi movement would not be intimidated or forced to abandon its political activities.
Linda Mwananchi Convoy Vehicle Torched
The incident came amid reports of another attack on the group’s convoy in Awendo, where a vehicle associated with the Linda Mwananchi team was reportedly set ablaze by unknown individuals.
The latest incidents have raised concerns over the safety of opposition political teams as political mobilisation intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Meanwhile, the Wiper Patriotic Front, led by former Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, was conducting a political mobilisation drive in Taita Taveta, where the team urged residents to vote against President William Ruto in the 2027 polls.
The reported attacks come amid growing political activity across the country, with rival political formations stepping up campaigns and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next General Election.
The circumstances surrounding the Migori and Awendo incidents remain under investigation, and it was not immediately clear who was responsible for the alleged attacks.
