Kisii — Residents of Emenwa village in Nyamache, Kisii County, have expressed disappointment after the owner of a homestead demolished a mud-walled kitchen that had recently attracted scores of people who believed they could see an image of the Virgin Mary on one of its walls.
The 65-year-old homeowner, Andrew Onsombi, said he decided to bring down the structure to restore peace and normalcy at his homestead after the site turned into an unexpected attraction.
On Tuesday morning, the usually busy road leading to Onsombi’s homestead was unusually quiet, a sharp contrast to scenes witnessed days earlier when residents and visitors flocked to the compound.
The mud-walled kitchen, which had become the centre of attention, was no longer standing.
Residents disappointed by demolition
The wall where some visitors claimed to see the face of Mary, the mother of Jesus, had been brought down, effectively ending the gatherings at the homestead.
Onsombi, who had been receiving what some described as pilgrims, could no longer host the visitors who had been arriving hoping to see the image.
The homeowner’s decision has triggered mixed reactions among residents.
While some understood Onsombi’s desire to regain privacy and restore normalcy, others expressed disappointment that the phenomenon had come to an abrupt end.
The development has left Emenwa village without the unusual attraction that had drawn crowds to the area, with the structure that sparked the interest now reduced to a memory.
