The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has called on Kenyans at home and abroad to light a candle at 6PM on Friday, October 2, 2026, in memory of its late leader, Raila Odinga.
The nationwide candle-lighting ceremony is part of ODM’s month-long “Mwezi wa Baba” programme, organised to mark the first anniversary of Raila’s death on October 15, 2025.
The party has urged Kenyans to participate wherever they are, with the candle-lighting expected to take place simultaneously across the country at 6PM.
In Nairobi, a major gathering will be held at Uhuru Park, with the event scheduled to run from 3PM until midnight.
Other designated venues include Treasury Square in Mombasa and Kisumu Central Square, where members of the public and ODM supporters are expected to gather for the tribute.
ODM has lined up several other activities throughout October, including a memorial rally in Kakamega on October 9 and family-led commemorations from October 10 to 15, culminating in a memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo on October 15.
Further memorial activities are planned in Garissa, the Coast region, Kajiado and Turkana before the programme concludes with a major Nairobi event on October 31.
The October programme is intended by ODM to commemorate Raila’s life and reflect on his political journey and contribution to Kenya.
