Alex Kiprotich, a senior editor at The Standard Group, has been found safe after he was allegedly abducted by armed men on Tuesday night while travelling along the Gilgil–Nakuru Road.

According to The Standard Group, Kiprotich, who serves as an Associate Editor, was found dumped near Masinga Dam about nine hours after he was allegedly abducted.

The media house announced the incident on Tuesday evening, saying Kiprotich was waylaid while travelling to Nakuru. A press statement released on September 1, 2026, said the incident occurred shortly before 9:20 p.m.

Standard Group Condemns Alleged Abduction

Standard Group CEO Chaacha Mwita strongly condemned the incident, linking it to Kiprotich’s investigative journalism and raising concerns about possible state involvement.

Mwita said the organisation did not believe the timing of the incident was coincidental, pointing to Kiprotich’s role in producing editorial content scrutinising the conduct of the state.

He said the circumstances surrounding the incident bore the hallmarks of what he described as a targeted attack against a journalist carrying out his professional duties.

The Standard Group has raised concerns over the safety of journalists and called for investigations into the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s alleged abduction.

Kiprotich Reportedly Targeted Before

The incident marks the second time in recent months that Kiprotich has reportedly been targeted, further raising concerns over his safety and the security of journalists undertaking investigative work.

Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction, including the identities and motives of the people involved.
