Police are currently detaining 24 Ethiopian nationals who were found abandoned in a bush in the Merti area of Isiolo.
According to police reports, the group walked to the Biliqo Patrol Base in the area after realizing that their smuggler had deserted them. The smuggler abandoned them after encountering numerous roadblocks on the highway while en route to Nairobi on Sunday.
The group informed the police that they were in transit to South Africa after crossing the Kenya-Ethiopia border with the assistance of smugglers.
This incident reflects a common trend in the area, occurring amidst a crackdown to address the issue of human smuggling and trafficking.
On Sunday, May 5, police at the Biliqo Patrol Base stated that a group of 24 Ethiopians surrendered themselves to the police after being abandoned in nearby bushes.
After being searched and interrogated, they were placed in custody, awaiting arraignment for the offence of being unlawfully present in Kenya.
The police are currently searching for the smugglers responsible for the incident.
These arrests are the latest in a series involving Ethiopians.
