Ballistics experts from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are currently examining a firearm recovered by the police in Kisumu, following a violent robbery of a Ugandan police officer by a gang.
The DCI revealed on Wednesday that the victim was a police officer stationed at Central Police Station, Tororo, during the incident. The recovered weapon is an AK47 rifle, retrieved by Kasagam police officers on patrol duties at Nyalenda A ward. The interception took place when the officers flagged down a suspicious vehicle, prompting the five occupants to hastily flee.
Upon searching the vehicle, the police found four mobile phones and the stolen police rifle. Additionally, a homemade gun was discovered during the processing of the vehicle by Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives.
District Police Commander in Tororo, Adam Kimuli, confirmed the incident and informed that some of the accomplices had already been apprehended in Uganda, where they faced charges before the Tororo District Court.
The DCI stressed that forensic analysis is currently in progress to obtain vital leads for identifying the suspects involved in the violent robbery. As part of the evidence collection process, the vehicle central to the ongoing investigation has been impounded by the DCI.
