Three men who reportedly visited marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum’s home shortly before his fatal road accident have been arrested.
The trio were arrested on Wednesday morning and taken to Iten police station, where they are currently in custody.
The arrest comes shortly after local politicians called on police to further dig into the accident and find out the root cause of the accident that killed the marathon record holder.
Kiptum’s grieving family had also indicated that they suspected foul play in the athlete’s death and had requested the government for assistance with investigations.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are expected to interrogate them regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Kiptum, aged 24, was driving from Kaptagat to Eldoret in the Rift Valley on the night of February 11 when his vehicle swerved off the road and collided with a tree. Tragically, both Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed instantly as a result of the crash.
