A 34-year-old woman who killed her two children in order to get married to her new lover has been slapped with a 17-year jail term after being found guilty of murder.

Flossy Cherono confessed before an Eldoret court that on the night of July 9, 2019, she killed her two children Ivy Chelagat, 11, and Beryl Chepchumba, 7. Her reason? To protect her relationship with her newly found lover in the hopes that he would marry her.

She admitted that strangled the two minors before slashing their bodies with a machete and then disposed them in a pit latrine.

“It is disturbing to believe that a mother would commit such a heinous crime against her own children who trusted her. It is ironic that the person who was supposed to care for the innocent children by offering care, protection, and love became the predator,” said the prosecution.

A post-mortem report tabled before the court also revealed that the children were strangled to death before being chopped into pieces.

“The children had been strangled to death while the other bled to death due to a deep cut on the head,” the postmortem report said

While delivering his judgment Justice Reuben Nyakundi of the Eldoret court expressed disappointment and shock at the mother’s confession.
