Perennial delays in the disbursement of funds to county governments is hampering service delivery, the Council of Governors has said.
The CoG chairperson Anne Waiguru, who is also Kirinyaga governor, has written to Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u, asking him to clear the Sh92.5 billion that counties are owed.
“This unwarranted delay has jeopardized the operations of the counties, rendered the counties unable to pay salaries, suppliers or continue to offer essential services to citizens,” Waiguru said in a letter dated March 9.
The governor further warned that any more delays, “will leave the counties in precarious positions not desirable of a government.”
The Treasury owes all 47 counties Sh29.6 billion for December 2022, Sh31.45 billion for January, and Sh31.45 billion for February, according to the CoG chair.
