A tragic incident at the Londiani junction in Kericho County on Friday evening has resulted in over 55 people feared dead, with numerous others currently hospitalized.

The devastating accident occurred around 6:30 pm when a truck lost control, plowing into pedestrians, business individuals, and parked matatus along the roadside.

The truck, en route to Kericho, veered off the road after losing control, causing severe damage as it collided with dozens of hawkers who were busy conducting their activities along the Nakuru-Kericho highway.

Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver was attempting to avoid a bus parked on the road due to a mechanical issue before losing control of the vehicle.

As a result of the evening accident, multiple Nissan matatus were left unrecognizable due to the extent of the damage caused.

Rescue operations, led by Londiani OCPD Agnes Kunga, are still underway, with several bodies believed to be trapped inside vehicles, including some beneath the truck.

Over 60 individuals have already been rushed to various hospitals in Londiani, Kericho, and Nakuru, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Unfortunately, the heavy rainfall at the accident site has impeded rescue efforts. The OCPD expressed that the number of casualties could be higher, but further updates will be provided by the relevant authorities in due course.
