Kenya has deported British terror suspect Jermaine Grant after the High Court ordered the state to return him to the UK following the completion of his jail sentence.

Grant, a close friend of notorious “White Widow” Samantha Lewthwaite, was jailed for 9 years in December 2015 for plotting terror attacks on the Kenyan coast.

He was jailed for nine charges related to trying to illegally obtain Kenyan citizenship, possessing bomb-making materials and being in possession of a forged passport.

“I order that the accused serves one year of imprisonment on each of the nine counts,” the judge said while passing sentence in 2015.

The sentences ran consecutively, implying he was to serve a total of nine years’ imprisonment.

Justice Anne Ong’injo directed the Cabinet Secretary responsible for Immigration to institute for removal of Grant from Kenya to Britain in accordance with the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) through Assistant DPP Jami Yamina filed the application stating that the deportation order had not been issued when he was sentenced by the lower court.

Prosecution Counsel Ngiri Wangui told Justice Ong’injo that Grant be removed from Kenya and to remain out of Kenya upon completion of his sentence or imprisonment.

Grant, from London, was arrested in 2011 when batteries and chemicals were discovered in his apartment in Mombasa.

He was sharing the apartment at the time of his arrest with “White Widow” who had been married to one of four suicide bombers who carried out deadly attacks on public transport in London on July 7, 2005.

The UK police, who provided forensic assistance to Kenyan authorities then, alleged they were “precursors for making highly volatile explosive substances”.

The “White Widow” he was associated with was also wanted in connection with the 7/7 bombings in London in 2005, was also suspected of being involved in the alleged plot.

She escaped arrest in Kenya in 2011 and has been missing since then.
