Police in Nairobi are currently investigating a perplexing murder case involving a Nigerian man and his Kenyan girlfriend.

The lifeless bodies of the couple, Rachael Kanini (31) and Olujobi Gbenga (36), were discovered last Monday, June 26, 2023, dumped in Ruai estate. The pair had previously been reported missing at the Kasarani police station.

The bodies of Kanini and Gbenga were found burned and abandoned along Jonah Road, which leads to Kanini’s residence.

Evidence at the scene suggests that the couple may have been killed before their bodies were set ablaze, as a partly burnt motor vehicle tire was discovered.

Autopsies revealed that Kanini had stab wounds in her chest and stomach, while Gbenga had injuries on his neck and hands, indicating possible torture prior to their deaths.

According to reports, a relative of Kanini contacted the Kasarani police on the night of June 26, under case number OB 2/26/06/2023, to report the abduction of Kanini and Gbenga from their home in Thome estate, Nairobi.

They were allegedly pulled out of their vehicle around 11 p.m., marking the last known sighting of the couple.

The following day, the abandoned vehicle was found about a kilometer away from their home in Thome estate, while the burned bodies were discovered in Ruai.

Since no identification documents were found on the victims, the bodies were taken to City Mortuary and initially recorded as unknown.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) suspect that the murder took place elsewhere and the bodies were subsequently dumped in the Ruai area.

Residents in the vicinity expressed shock upon discovering the naked bodies of the man and woman.

Although the scene initially appeared to be a case of mob lynching, neighbors claimed not to have heard any commotion on the night of the incident.

At Kasarani police station, DCI investigators are pursuing significant leads in an effort to identify the killers.

One theory being explored is that Kanini, who was engaged to Gbenga and was three months pregnant at the time of her death, may have been targeted because of the pregnancy.

The identity of the unborn child’s father remains unknown. Additionally, investigators are considering the possibility of a love triangle being connected to the double murder.

The police investigation continues as they strive to uncover the truth behind this tragic and mysterious crime.
