A robber who embarked on a spending spree while making huge Mpesa deposits was arrested a day after stealing Sh348,000 from a Chinese contractor when neighbours noticed he was suddenly flush with money.

Robert Walubengo was arrested yesterday at Kariobangi North in Nairobi after neighbours informed the police that he was acting suspiciously. He was moving from one Mpesa shop to another asking if he could deposit Sh100,000.

Unknown to them, a Chinese contractor had been robbed of Sh348,000 a day earlier in the neighbouring Kasarani estate.

Jinlin, a senior finance officer at a Chinese construction firm had borrowed money from a friend to pay casual workers at the company before he was attacked and robbed by three men.He was also robbed of his mobile phone worth Sh170, 000, spectacles Sh30, 000 and headphones during the alleged robbery.

The robbery was reported at the Kasarani Stadium police station and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took up the investigation.

The investigators did not even have to scratch their heads too much. Walubengo’s neighbours did the job for them.
