Why Uhuru administration funded Wajackoya manifesto launch

Funding George Wajackoya was one of the strategies the Uhuru Kenyatta government used to hinder William Ruto’s bid for the presidency.

Mutahi Ngunyi, the former technical advisor to ex-president Uhuru Kenyatta, has unveiled the strategies employed by a faction within the previous administration to hinder William Ruto’s bid for the presidency.

Ngunyi revealed that during this time, Uhuru had already thrown his support behind opposition leader Raila Odinga and was cognizant of efforts to impede Ruto’s progress in garnering public support for the upcoming 2022 elections.

Ngunyi highlighted several alleged tactics that were used. One of these involved funding the launch of George Wajackoya’s presidential campaign manifesto.

The timing of Wajackoya’s launch was intentionally coordinated to clash with the launch of Kenya Kwanza’s manifesto, a move aimed at disrupting Ruto’s event.

Ngunyi explained, “I received information from Uhuru Kenyatta’s associates, and we financially backed Wajackoya’s launch. We strategically scheduled it to coincide with Ruto’s launch… Our rationale was that Ruto had a quick temper, and we wanted to provoke him to create a situation where the media would split their screens between the two events.”

Detailing the political discord between Uhuru and Ruto, Ngunyi recounted that his bank accounts were frozen after he confronted Uhuru about supporting Ruto and later met with Ruto at his residence in Karen.

“Uhuru’s argument was that this might have adverse repercussions for some of us. I countered that he wouldn’t be running for president anyway, so what’s the harm in supporting it? Let’s at least promote his deputy’s chances of taking office,” Ngunyi explained.

“However, my actions led to a request for me to cease, and at one point, my bank accounts were frozen on two occasions.”

This occurred against the backdrop of Ngunyi’s switch to President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza camp. He stated that he had revised his stance on the president.

“Public announcement: I have shifted my allegiance to William Ruto. I had misjudged him through the ‘dynasty’ lens. But if circumstances change, opinions must change. Only a fool remains obstinate. I initiated Project #HustlerNation, and now I must see it through. Any questions? #RutosMountainPlan,” Ngunyi conveyed via the X social media platform.

Ngunyi clarified that his defection shouldn’t be misconstrued as aligning with the Kenya Kwanza government; rather, he supports the principles of the “Hustler Nation” ideology.

“After KK assumed power, it seems they abandoned the core ideology and ethos of the Hustler Nation movement that propelled them into authority. My objective is to rekindle it,” Ngunyi stated.

“I’m not a politician but a political scholar. I’m a thinker, not an activist. Thus, I’ve embraced the essence of the Hustler Nation idea, especially as I was instrumental in its inception.”
