In Kilifi County, law enforcement authorities have confiscated 316 kilograms of marijuana, with an estimated street value of Sh9,480,000, following a vehicle accident involving a Toyota Land Cruiser on Monday afternoon.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations revealed that the illicit drugs were concealed in seven gunny bags and being transported along the Kaloleni – Mavueni route in the SUV, which was registered under the number KDC 300L at the time of the incident.
The vehicle, which had a punctured right rear tire, appears to have been traveling at high speed when it veered off the road and ended up in a ditch.
The crash forced the occupants to flee the scene in haste.
“In the course of the search, registration plates KBQ 580K, KBZ 528N, KDA 639A & KDC 947C (the latter resembling parastatal vehicles) were discovered,” police reported.
The seized narcotics have been retained as evidence, while the vehicle has been impounded as an investigation into the identity and whereabouts of the individuals involved in the incident commences.
