Nyeri police have arrested three people in connection with the theft of more than 417 mobile phones, all of which have been successfully recovered.
The arrests followed an incident in Gatitu where two of the suspects, John Kariuki and James Thuita, were apprehended while attempting to snatch mobile phones from shoppers.
Upon questioning Kariuki and Thuita, investigators proceeded to the Gatitu shopping center, where they apprehended their accomplice, 32-year-old David Thinwa Ngatia.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that Ngatia had been operating a mobile phone repair shop, which was also found to contain other stolen items.
“John Kariuki and James Thuita were nabbed on November 1, 2023, before detectives proceeded to Gatitu shopping center where their accomplice David Thinwa Ngatia, who operated a mobile phone repair shop, was ambushed, and the recoveries made,” stated the DCI.
The seized items included two TV sets, three laptops, two cameras, 47 mobile subscriber SIM cards, an HP printer, and more.
The DCI has urged the public to remain vigilant against pickpockets and expressed a firm commitment to ensuring that those involved in theft are brought to justice. The trio is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
