A Form Four student at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Lugari, Kakamega County collapsed and dies after taking part in a marathon.
Timothy Akila passed away while receiving treatment at Chekalini Hospital. The 20-year-old collapsed during the race marathon competition held at Chekalini Secondary School.
According to reports, Akila had been in good spirits that morning, as he eagerly prepared to partake in the school games. His father, Fred Amugunya, recounted speaking to his son before he departed for the event.
“I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games. I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” expressed Amugunya, who was devastated by the sudden turn of events.
Shortly thereafter, Amugunya received a distressing call, informing him of his son’s tragic demise.
“I don’t know what really happened,” lamented a distraught Amugunya, grappling with the inexplicable loss.
In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, the family is pleading with the government to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Akila’s death.
Meanwhile, area chief Julius Mpapale has urged both parents and teachers to remain vigilant about students’ health conditions, particularly those engaging in sports activities, in a bid to prevent such crises from occurring in the future.
