A Form One student, unfortunately, lost her life after drowning in River Nyabsongo in Migori county. The student, enrolled at Mobachi Secondary School in Suna West, fell into the raging waters while attempting to cross the river via a makeshift bridge.

According to Area Assistant Chief Samwel Otieno, the girl was swept away by the strong currents of River Nyabsongo.

The local administrator further speculated that the student may have experienced an epileptic seizure while traversing the wooden bridge.

The unfortunate event was witnessed by another student who was crossing the bridge at the time. Upon sighting the girl’s body in the water, she immediately raised the alarm.

Local residents swiftly responded to the distress call and managed to retrieve the girl’s body from the river. Her body was transfereed to the mortuary at Migori Level Four Hospital.

Otieno has now called upon members of the community to be vigilant when crossing the river. Residents have also called upon the government to hastily construct a permanent and stronger bridge.
