Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology has announced to its staff that it will refund all staff members their housing levy deductions made in January 2024.
The communication was done by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor through an internal memo addressed to staff.
“The Court of Appeal on January 26., 2024 dismissed a stay application where the Government sought to continue collecting the Housing Levy until its appeal is determined. This action in effect halted the housing levy deduction from the month of January, 2024. The ruling came at a time when the University had already processed the payroll and effected the deductions,” the University notified its staff.
According to the memo, the deductions will be refunded by February 09, 2024.
The high court suspended the deductions in a landmark ruling that was done in January 2024. The Housing Levy deductions started in July 2023.
