Two primary school pupils were shot in an ambush on Monday in Baringo County.
The victims, who were tending to livestock, were fatally shot by gunmen who also made off with the animals, according to Baringo police boss Julius Kiragu.
This incident is the latest in a series of similar attacks in the area, prompting residents to call on the government to address the ongoing menace that has significantly impacted daily operations.
“The gunmen had been loitering in the area before carrying out the attack in the evening hours, taking away an unknown number of animals,” Kiragu explained.
Law enforcement authorities have initiated a major operation in the region to apprehend the gang responsible for the attacks. As of Tuesday morning, there had been no recovery of the stolen animals.
A week prior to this incident, locals had staged a protest against the escalating insecurity, urging authorities to take decisive action. The protest followed the killing of a visually impaired teacher. This incident occurred just days after five individuals were killed in separate bandit attacks in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Samburu counties.
The North Rift region is witnessing a resurgence of attacks, leading to the disruption of normal activities. Numerous schools have been forced to close due to these incidents, resulting in a significant loss of life.
