Authorities in Kirinyaga have launched a massive manhunt for a suspect accused of brutally murdering his mother before fleeing the scene, leaving the community in shock.
The victim, identified as Jane Wamuirua, aged 56, was tragically discovered lifeless in a pool of blood on her farm in Riakiania on Thursday.
According to Joseph Nyamu, the assistant chief of Riakiania sub-location, the distressing incident occurred at 8 am and was swiftly reported to the Baricho police station in Kirinyaga West sub-county.
Reports suggest that the altercation between the son and his mother erupted over the clearing of coffee bushes on the farm, which allegedly led to a heated argument between them.
It is revealed that the mother and son had a history of discord, and had even sought intervention from local authorities earlier in the week to resolve a long-standing dispute regarding their land ownership.
Apparently, the deceased had intended to sell a portion of the land, a decision vehemently opposed by her son. In what appears to be an act of retaliation, the mother purportedly proceeded to clear her son’s coffee bushes.
The grim discovery of Jane Wamuirua’s lifeless body was made by her other son, James Miano, who promptly alerted the assistant chief.
Authorities examining the scene reported that the victim sustained multiple severe lacerations on her neck, right knee, right hand, and fingers, indicative of a vicious attack with a sharp object.
Among the items recovered at the crime scene were a blood-soaked head scarf and a mobile phone belonging to the victim.
The body has since been transferred to Kerugoya Referral Hospital for further examination pending a post-mortem.
Moses Kosgey, the sub-county police commander, has issued an appeal to the public for any information that could assist in locating the suspect, who remains at large, urging community members to come forward and aid in the apprehension of the perpetrator.
