Politician becomes conman after losing 2022 elections

A politician who unsuccessfully vied for a parliamentary seat in 2022 was arrested on Saturday on suspicion that he had become a serial conman.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives raced Militonic Mwendwa to his Kitui home where he was hiding after allegedly impersonating EACC officials to defraud job seekers.

According to a statement , Kitute was described as “an armed and dangerous criminal” who issued fake Integrity Clearance Certificates at a fee. He is accused of using the identities of high-ranking EACC officials to convince his victims.

The statement further revealed that Kitute has a criminal record and unsuccessfully vied for a parliamentary seat in the 2022 elections.

“EACC Detectives tracked the suspect, Militonic Mwendwa Kitute, from Nairobi to his Kitui home where he was arrested on Saturday at 4 am,” the statement reads. “A firearm and seven mobile phones were confiscated from him.”

Kitute was taken to Kilimani Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in court today, Monday, April 22nd.
