School activities at Koiyet Secondary School in Bomet County were disrupted on Monday morning after a Form Four student gave birth in the school toilet and abandoned the newborn in a pit latrine before returning to class.

According to Chepalungu Sub-County Police Commander Phanton Analo, the incident was reported by the school principal after the 19-year-old student was noticed bleeding excessively while seated in class. Concerned classmates alerted the teacher on duty, prompting an immediate response.

“The teacher on duty rushed to the class and found that the said student, after relieving herself in the toilet, decided to conceal that she had given birth,” Analo stated.

Upon realizing the situation, the school principal mobilized staff and members of the public to retrieve the infant from the pit latrine. Both the student and her baby were rushed to Sigor Sub-County Hospital for emergency care before being referred to Longisa County Hospital for further medical attention.

Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, as the community expresses concern over teenage pregnancies and the need for better support systems in schools.
