Transport along Nairobi’s busy Jogoo Road was brought to a standstill for a significant part of Tuesday morning as traders protested against planned demolitions at Uhuru Market.

The demonstrations began at Uhuru Market, a short distance from Jogoo Road, before the enraged traders marched onto the highway. Images and videos circulating online showed large crowds of agitated traders blocking the road.

In a show of defiance, the protesters set tyres and litter ablaze on the highway, making it impassable for matatus and other vehicles plying the route.
