Alex Mutua, a key suspect in the killing of British national Campbell Scott, was formally charged with murder on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty before Justice James Wakiaga.
The court heard that Mutua, together with other accomplices, is accused of committing the offence on February 16, 2025, in the Pipeline area of Nairobi.
The prosecution informed the court that they had filed an affidavit opposing bail. Justice Wakiaga directed the prosecution to submit the affidavit formally within three days. He also ordered the preparation of a pre-bail report within 21 days.
Mutua is expected to return to court on June 17 for a pre-trial conference and to have his bail application heard.
Scott was first reported missing on February 17, 2025. His decomposing body was later discovered in Makongo Forest, Makueni County.
Investigators believe the suspects lured the British national into a fake business meeting while he was in Nairobi. He vanished on February 17 and was allegedly murdered shortly thereafter.
One of the suspects linked to the crime, Samuel Musembi Kamitu, reportedly attempted to take poison and later fatally stabbed himself while hiding in Nairobi’s Dandora estate.
Two other suspects — Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, also known as Edu, and Bernard Mbunga Mbusu — remain at large.
Mutua, along with another individual, Albunus Mutinda Nzioki, is currently assisting police with the ongoing investigation.
