Korogocho MCA Absalom Odhiambo has come out strongly against the Nation Media Group following a front-page exposé that linked him to the violent disruption of peaceful anti-police brutality protests in Nairobi on Tuesday, June 17.
In a strongly worded video shared on social media on Thursday, June 19, Odhiambo denied any involvement in organizing or leading gangs to suppress demonstrators, calling the allegations “false, malicious, and politically motivated.”
The Daily Nation article, headlined “How Chaos Was Planned in the City”, featured images of Odhiambo alongside Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri and prominent grassroots activist “Gaucho.” The report accused the trio of playing roles in allegedly orchestrating attacks on peaceful protesters during the Gen Z-led demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
Odhiambo, however, insists he was nowhere near the protest zones when the violence erupted.
“I was in an interview with another media house when all this happened,” he said. “If I was involved in any planning of these protests, I want you (Nation) to investigate me. Trace my phone because you’ve ruined my reputation.”
He further stated that he has always supported peaceful protests and could never be involved in any criminal activity aimed at intimidating or harming fellow citizens.
“This is character assassination. The report is based on unverified claims, and I will be taking legal action,” the MCA declared.
Odhiambo’s name has trended online in recent days, with many demanding accountability over the deployment of goons alleged to have attacked protesters with clubs and crude weapons.
Nation Media Group has yet to respond publicly to the MCA’s legal threats.
