Tragedy struck in Ibeno village, Kisii County, after a pregnant woman drowned in a 30-foot deep well while fetching water on Tuesday, police and local authorities confirmed.
The victim, Faith Nyangweso, aged 26, had gone to the well but failed to return home, prompting concerned family members to launch a search.
“She left to fetch water but never came back. When we noticed she was taking too long, we raised the alarm,” said one of her relatives at the scene.
Police who arrived at the site confirmed that Nyangweso had drowned. “We visited the scene and established that the deceased, who was expectant, drowned as she fetched water,” said a local police officer.
A team from the Kisii County Disaster Management Unit was deployed and successfully retrieved the body from the well. It was then moved to the mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
Local leaders have since called for the covering or fencing of open wells in the area, noting that many remain exposed and pose significant danger, especially to women and children.
