A female police constable has died after a botched abortion procedure at a private hospital in Kabiru, Kawangware, Nairobi, in an incident that has shocked both residents and the police service.
The officer, who was reportedly on leave from her station in Embakasi, was rushed to the second hospital while unconscious and bleeding, after being transferred from another unnamed facility.
Witnesses said she was visibly hemorrhaging when she arrived in a private car. A doctor at the second facility confirmed that the policewoman was already dead on arrival, and stated there was no need to move her further.
Preliminary investigations suggest the officer may have undergone an induced abortion, with the procedure reportedly intended to initiate labor. The plan appears to have gone tragically wrong, leading to severe bleeding and eventual death.
Police have since arrested a nurse on duty and a driver linked to the case. Both were taken into custody on Wednesday, and authorities say further investigations are underway.
“The body was moved to the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination,” said a police report.
Although abortion in Kenya is restricted, it is legally permitted when the life or health of the mother is at risk, or under specific legal exceptions. However, unsafe abortions remain widespread, often performed in secret and under unsafe conditions, risking the lives of many women.
Medical sources and community leaders in Kawangware say such procedures are common but rarely reported, as stigma and fear of legal consequences drive many to seek help from unregulated facilities.
The incident adds to the growing debate about reproductive rights and access to safe healthcare in the country.
