KIRINYAGA, Kenya — One person has died while three others sustained serious injuries after two motorcycles collided head-on at White Rose area in Mutithi, along the Mwea-Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.

The accident occurred at around 7 p.m. on Thursday, with residents raising fresh concerns over what they describe as an increasing number of fatal crashes along the busy highway.

Lydia Njeri, a shopkeeper operating near the scene, said she was shocked to find four of her friends lying on the road shortly after the collision.

According to Njeri, the two motorcycles were travelling at high speed when they collided, producing a loud bang that attracted nearby residents.

Villagers rushed to the scene and helped evacuate the injured victims to White Rose Private Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Residents Demand Road Safety Measures

White Rose Boda Boda Chairman Waweru Kiama said several people have lost their lives at the same location, which he blamed partly on inadequate road safety measures.

Kiama said the stretch has no speed bumps and lacks sufficient road signs despite rapid development and increased traffic in the area.

Residents are now calling on the Ministry of Roads to install speed bumps along the stretch between Wamumu and Mutithi and introduce additional measures to control speeding.

They are also pushing for the Mwea-Embu Highway to be expanded into a dual carriageway, citing the rising number of accidents along the route.

Meanwhile, the three injured victims remain admitted at White Rose Private Hospital.

The deceased has been identified as Jamleck Wainaina, with his body transferred to the mortuary.

Traffic police officers from Wang’uru Police Station visited the scene and launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal collision.

The two motorcycles involved in the crash have since been towed to Wang’uru Police Station as investigations continue.
