KWALE, Kenya — A 21-year-old man has drowned while swimming in the Indian Ocean at Watatu Watano Beach in Diani, Kwale County.

The deceased, identified as Lawrence Bahati, was reportedly swimming when he drowned.

Police officers visited the scene on Wednesday evening and recovered his body after efforts to rescue him proved unsuccessful.

According to eyewitnesses, strong winds were blowing at the time of the incident, making rescue efforts difficult.

Police officers processed and documented the scene before the body was transferred to the Msambweni Sub-County Hospital mortuary.

The body is being preserved at the facility pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
