Police in Siaya County, alongside officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), have launched an investigation after a suspect was found dead in what is believed to be a suicide inside the Ukwala police cells.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning. According to police reports, the body of 26-year-old Joseph Otieno Oduor, also known as Sande, was discovered hanging from a metal rod in the toilet of the cell.
He had been taken into custody following the issuance of a court warrant and was facing charges of defilement.
Police said he hanged himself in a toilet at the cells using his own shirt.
“The body was found hanging on a metal water pipe with his shirt around his neck,” authorities stated.
Family members revealed that Oduor had a history of suicidal tendencies, noting he had attempted to take his own life in the past.
Senior police officers visited the scene as part of the ongoing investigation. The body has since been moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
