The government has received a consignment of three million Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine doses at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), aimed at strengthening the country’s routine immunization programme.
The shipment, which arrived on Wednesday evening, was received by Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, who emphasized the importance of the delivery in protecting the country’s most vulnerable population — newborns and young children — from tuberculosis (TB).
“The vaccines, delivered with the support of UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO), come at a critical time to replenish national stocks and sustain Kenya’s routine immunization programme,” the PS noted.
Dr. Oluga confirmed that the distribution of the vaccines to all counties will begin immediately to avoid any disruption in immunization services.
“This delivery underscores the Ministry’s commitment to vaccine security and equitable access across all regions,” the PS said.
Dr. Oluga was joined by officials from UNICEF and WHO — key partners in the procurement and delivery of vaccines. Also present were Dr. Bashir Issak, Head of the Directorate of Family Health, and Dr. Rose Jalango, Head of the National Vaccines and Immunization Programme (NVIP), along with senior officials from the Ministry of Health.
