Former University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, the first woman to hold the institution’s highest ceremonial office, has passed away.

The news of her death was confirmed by former University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi, who paid tribute to her as a distinguished education champion and philanthropist whose impact extended far beyond the university.

Prof. Kiama described Dr. Rattansi as a committed advocate for higher education, noting that her dedication to scholarships and mentorship opened doors for thousands of academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students.

Dr. Rattansi was appointed Chancellor of the University of Nairobi in 2013, making history as the first woman to occupy the position since the university’s establishment in 1970.

Throughout her decade-long tenure, which ended in 2023, she presided over graduation ceremonies, conferred degrees and honorary awards, and promoted academic excellence while serving as the institution’s ceremonial head.

Outside the university, Dr. Rattansi earned widespread recognition for her philanthropic work through the Rattansi Educational Trust, where she served as Chairperson and Trustee. Under her leadership, the trust provided scholarships to thousands of deserving students, enabling many to pursue higher education despite financial hardship.

She also held leadership roles in several charitable organisations, including the Daisy Eye Cancer Fund and the Sir Michael Blundell Trust, reflecting her long-standing commitment to education, healthcare and community development.

In recognition of her exceptional service to society, Dr. Rattansi received numerous honours, including the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Moi University.

Her passing marks the end of a distinguished career dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and supporting charitable causes across Kenya.
