Police in Suswa, Narok County, have launched investigations after two armed men reportedly ambushed a police officer’s vehicle and helped a prisoner escape while he was being transferred from Bomet County to Nairobi.

The incident occurred on the night of August 1, 2026, along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Highway in Suswa Township, according to a police report filed at Suswa Police Station.

The officer, Chief Inspector Pius Nduda, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) of Kapkuen Police Station in Bomet County, was driving his private Subaru vehicle, registration number KDA 195D, with one prisoner on board.

The prisoner was identified as Robert Rono, who had been arrested at Kapkuen Police Station over allegations of obtaining money by false pretences.

Nduda had booked out Rono from Kapkuen Police Station on August 1 following a request by DCI Kibra to have the suspect escorted to Kibra Police Station.

The officer handcuffed Rono and placed him in the back seat of his private vehicle before embarking on the journey.

However, trouble struck when the officer reached Suswa Township along the Narok-Mai Mahiu Highway.

According to the police report, Nduda stopped behind another vehicle that had slowed down. Moments later, two men allegedly emerged from the darkness while armed with firearms and confronted the officer.

The suspects reportedly freed Rono before fleeing from the scene with him. One of the handcuffs used to restrain the prisoner was left behind inside the vehicle.

Officers from Suswa Police Station responded immediately after the incident was reported and launched an extensive search for the escaped prisoner and his alleged accomplices.

However, the search did not yield any arrests, with Rono and the two armed men remaining at large.

Detectives have since launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape and are pursuing leads that could help establish the identities and whereabouts of the three suspects.

Police are also expected to establish how the armed men obtained information about the prisoner’s transfer and whether the escape was part of a wider organised operation.
